Cầu Kiều Collective would like to extend our sincerest support to those impacted the ongoing situation in Afghanistan. In recent weeks, we have seen an outpouring of support and analysis from the Vietnamese community all over the world, and understand that it has invoked strong emotions given our own history with war and displacement.
Afghanistan is seldom covered outside a sensationalised context, so we urge the Vietnamese community to research and understand the complex geopolitical issues at play before weighing in, if at all.
In saying this, Cầu Kiều would like to firmly caution the Vietnamese community against inappropriate comparisons between the inner workings of the Taliban with that of revolutionaries who liberated Vietnam during the American War.
We nonetheless recognize the parallels between Vietnam and Afghanistan as it pertains to imperialism.
As Vietnamese anti-imperialists, we intimately understand the horrors of ongoing, debilitating imperial warfare.
Continual war and division in Afghanistan has been a violent project orchestrated by the American empire and its collaborators.
The United States’ departure we are seeing now is a step in the right direction, and we are in solidarity with Afghan people in their ongoing fights for justice. While we know the path forward is hard, we hope and we believe that the Afghan people will resolutely win their fight against imperialism and create a liberating society for all of Afghanistan.
Cầu Kiều Collective stand in firm solidarity with the Afghan people and all those in the Global South in their fight against western imperialism.
